  • About Us

Conecting students and animals together here at Kent State University!

4 the Love of Paws - KSU is a Student Organization at Kent State University (Main Campus). Founded by Melanie Hudock, a student and animal lover who wanted to to bring animals to campus in a fun and stress-free way.

"I often missed my pets and volunteering at local rescues near my house. For me animals were not just a thing, they were my family, my best friend, and a special part of my daily life. Campus had an animal-less feeling and for me it was hard to adjust to life with out a furry friend. I saw the need after talking with other students on campus who experienced similar feelings. I took the challenge and started this group in hopes it would connect students with other students on campus who had the same passions as I do. After throwing around ideas, 4 the Love of Paws - KSU finally kicked off the ground in February 2013, connecting wonderful local animal organizations in our community to students on campus. I am happy to be that bridge for fellow students and those in the surrounding community. We get to support wonderful organizations and learn new things while being hands on with animals! It's very rewarding. I hope this group can continue to grow and improve over the years and inspire Kent State to see how much animals can play a positive role in students lives! I know this group changed my experience at Kent State and I hope it will do the some for future members. I wish everyone luck and much fun in the coming years!"

    What we do:

4 the Love of Paws is a Student organization at Kent State University. We are not affiliated with any other animal organizations on campus.

    1. Volunteer Work: Currently we volunteer with the Akron Humane Society, One of a Kind Pet Rescue, and The Portage County Dog Warden.
    2. Outings in the community: Typically, we schedule these events on weekend days, twice each month. Just a few things we have done in the past include horseback riding, zoo trips, trip to Walnut Creek Farm, and our annual Puppy Party, where a local rescue brings the puppies near campus! We are also open to suggestions for new ideas from our members!
    3. Fundraising: We love to make a difference and often choose a local nonprofit animal organization to hold a fundraiser for. We typically hold a week long fundraiser each semester.  We also have small fundraisers in the community to benefit our student group through the year. Our biggest fundraising event is our annual Walk-A-Thon on campus!
    4. Meetings: We usually meet at least once a month to keep everyone updated on current events and fundraisers. Meetings are held in the student center, typically on Thursday evenings at 7:00 (days/times may change per semester so email us if you are unsure). During our meetings we may have a guest speaker in an animal/environmental career or a fun activity/game.
    5. Creative Outlet: We also enjoy crafts, such as decorating containers and designing posters for upcoming fundraisers, making cat and dog toys, cooking dog and cat treats and more!

Not only do we strive for this group to be fun but also educational. Students will learn about careers they may want to pursue through connecting with speakers and experiences in the community. We currently do a lot of activities off campus (don't worry we carpool!). Unfortunately, we are limited to how much we can do on campus with animals. We hope that one day Kent State will become a more animal friendly campus because of the many benefits animals bring to students; but until then, we will still find ways to have fun! Bringing animal lovers together to create friendships and share passions, this student organization is meant to be a stress free laid-back group (we have a zero-tolerance policy to bullying), we are all friends here! Any animal lover is welcome to join!

    Message to Students:

WE ARE NOT A RESCUE! It is important to understand that we are all about animals and connecting students to animals, but we are not trying to promote students to adopt animals. Having a pet is a HUGE responsibility and should not be taken lightly. We see too many students rehoming animals and abandoning them when students graduate, move or leave the country. Adoption is a lifetime commitment. Please reconsider adoption until you are able to make that commitment. Remember, there are many ways you can get involved and get your "animal fix" through volunteering and fostering! Our student organization is another great source available to you on campus that will allow you to engage with animals in a meaningful way!

  • Annual Spark Bark Walk-A-Thon

    Fundraising For: Portages APL

4 the Love of Paws has chosen this rescue to support at our 2018 Walk-a-thon to raise awareness about this organization, as well as to raise funds in hopes of helping them continue to rescue the animals who truly need their help.

Remembering the Pets We've Loved and Lost:

The Spark Bark Walk-A-Thon was started by our President Aleah Burris in memory of her dog, Sparky, who is pictured on the right.

    Here is her story:

"When I was seven years old I desperately wanted a dog, however, I was told I was not allowed to get one unless I paid for it myself. After a long time of saving, I finally saved enough to adopt Sparky. My mother and I took the adventure to the local shelter to pick a dog out.

We got to the shelter and there were rows after rows of dogs to choose from. I turned the corner and saw Sparky. We had an instant connection and I knew he was the one. Sadly this was not a no kill shelter and as we were filling out the paper work we were told Sparky was scheduled to be euthanized the next morning due to lack of space. Sparky and I quickly became the greatest of friends. He was there for everything in my life; all the important parts including the bad. He has played a part in shaping who I am today. Every day I think how different my life would be if he was scheduled to be euthanized one day sooner.

Sparky passed away at the age of 17 in April of 2015. Because of the impact Sparky made on me I decided to dedicate my career to give back to the rescues that have done so much for us and to help end unnecessary euthanasian. Also, to show others the huge impact a rescue can make."
